The News Publishers' Association is devastated at the news that Newshub, one of New Zealand major newsrooms, is to close.

“This is a disaster for New Zealand journalism,” the NPA’s Director of Public Affairs, Andrew Holden, said.

“More than 50 journalists, including some of our best-known television presenters, are losing their jobs. They have been a fundamental part of our lives, telling our stories, making us laugh and cry, and exploring so many key issues on our behalf.”

“Just two weeks ago many media companies, including Newshub’s owner, Warner Bros. Discovery NZ, spoke to a parliamentary Select Committee about how tough it was to operate a media business in New Zealand.”

“It is tragic that this is now being demonstrated in such a brutal way.”

“We need a media ecosystem that is financially healthy and can maintain a wide range of newsrooms and voices. This is, without doubt, a very sad day for New Zealand and our journalism.”
