The News Publishers' Association will bring together media and communications spokespeople from across New Zealand's political parties for a special election debate focused on the future of the country's media sector.
Moderated by NZME Editor at Large, Shayne Currie, the debate will provide an opportunity for parties to outline their plans for New Zealand’s news media industry ahead of the election and discuss some of the most pressing issues facing the sector.
Topics will include the sustainability of local and regional journalism, the relationship between news publishers and digital platforms, the use of news content by AI companies, the future of public media, and the role of trusted news in a healthy democracy.
Confirmed participants include Minister Paul Goldsmith (National), Jenny Marcroft (NZ First), Reuben Davidson (Labour), Hūhana Lyndon (Green Party), Holly Knill (The Opportunity Party), and Oriini Kaipara (Te Pāti Māori).
News Publishers’ Association General Manager Brook Cameron said the debate comes at a critical time for both the media sector and New Zealand democracy.
“New Zealand’s democracy depends on a strong, sustainable and trusted news media. Yet the challenges facing our industry have never been more significant. From the future of local journalism to the use of news content by AI companies, the decisions made by the next Parliament will have far-reaching consequences for how New Zealanders access reliable information.
“This debate provides a rare opportunity for parties to set out their vision for the sector and for voters to hear directly how they intend to support a healthy media ecosystem. By livestreaming the discussion, we’re ensuring these important conversations are accessible to everyone.”
Attendance at the event is by invitation only. However, the debate will be livestreamed to enable members of the public to engage with the discussion and hear directly from political parties on the future of New Zealand’s media landscape.
The debate is expected to provide a valuable forum for informed discussion on the policies and priorities that will influence the future of New Zealand journalism.
