The Asia Media Centre is again sponsoring Junior Reporter of the Year, and in addition is offering a $2,500 travel voucher prize to the winner of the award. Junior Reporter of the Year is open to print-based, website and broadcast journalists who have either been employed as a reporter, or active as a freelancer for three years or less at the time the stories appeared, or be 26 years old or under. Students and interns may also enter this category. Although a team may have been involved in the production, the primary storyteller should be one reporter only.
The News Publishers’ Association (NPA) is delighted to announce the introduction of a fee waiver for all entries to the Student Journalist of the Year award this year. This sponsorship demonstrates the NPA’s commitment to one of their key pillars – sustainability of journalism. The Student Journalist of the Year award is open to print-based, website and broadcast journalists. Entrants must have been enrolled as journalism students during 2019/2020, 2020 or 2020/2021 for year-long programmes starting mid-year. Student interns also qualify for this award. In addition, university and technical college students who have had articles published in student/university magazines during 2020 may also enter this award.

The Asia Media Centre was set up by the Asia New Zealand Foundation, New Zealand’s leading authority on Asia, to help improve the breadth and depth of coverage of Asia-related issues in the New Zealand media. The centre does this by helping New Zealand media to access expertise on Asia and Asian peoples; providing contextual information on emerging issues; highlighting stories and issues that might otherwise get missed; and helping journalists to access a broader range of voices for their media coverage. The Asia Media Centre also administers the Foundation’s well-established media programme of professional development for New Zealand journalists.
The News Publishers’ Association champions the news media industry of New Zealand and represents members’ interests in areas such as government affairs, media regulation and public funding of journalism, including management and promotion of the national media awards which celebrate excellence in journalism. The NPA also promotes the power of news media as a highly effective advertising medium and offers a centralised national newspaper advertising booking service for accredited media agencies (previously News Works).
