The News Publishers' Association (NPA) is pleased to announce that Newsroom has joined the Association as an Associate Member, further strengthening collaboration and representation across New Zealand's news media sector.

Newsroom’s membership reflects the NPA’s commitment to bringing together a broad range of news publishers and news-producing organisations to help build a stronger collective voice for trusted journalism in New Zealand. At a time of significant change for the media industry, collaboration across the sector has never been more important.

As news publishers continue to navigate evolving commercial, technological, regulatory and public policy challenges, the NPA remains focused on ensuring the industry can work together to promote the value of professional journalism and support a sustainable future for trusted news.

NPA Chair Grant McKenzie said Newsroom’s membership reflects the importance of industry-wide cooperation.

“Quality journalism is fundamental to an informed and democratic society. We’re delighted to welcome Newsroom to the NPA and look forward to working together on the issues that matter most to New Zealand’s news media sector.”

Brook Cameron, General Manager of the NPA, said Newsroom brings an important perspective to the Association.

“Newsroom has established itself as a respected and influential source of public interest journalism in New Zealand. Its membership further strengthens the NPA’s ability to represent the breadth of New Zealand’s news media sector and advocate on behalf of publishers committed to producing trusted, high-quality journalism.”

“At a time when digital platforms and AI services are increasingly benefiting from professionally produced news content, it is more important than ever that organisations investing in journalism work together on issues affecting the future of the industry. Newsroom’s membership strengthens our collective voice as we advocate for a sustainable and innovative news sector that continues to deliver trusted journalism for New Zealand audiences.”

Mark Jennings, Co-Editor and Co-Chief Executive of Newsroom, said joining the Association was a positive step for both organisations and the wider media sector.

“Newsroom was founded on the belief that quality journalism matters. Joining the NPA provides an opportunity to work alongside other publishers on issues affecting the future of news in New Zealand and to support efforts that strengthen the sustainability and value of independent journalism.”

“The challenges facing media today require greater collaboration across the industry. We look forward to contributing to the NPA’s work and helping ensure New Zealanders continue to have access to trusted, public interest journalism.”

Newsroom joins the NPA at a time when a strong and collaborative news media sector is increasingly important to addressing shared challenges, supporting media sustainability, and reinforcing the essential role journalism plays in New Zealand’s democratic and civic life.
