Allied Media Chief Executive Grant McKenzie has been appointed Chair of the News Publishers’ Association (NPA), succeeding Sinead Boucher, who has led the industry body since 2023.

McKenzie brings extensive leadership and financial experience to the role, having returned to Allied Media as Chief Executive in 2016 after serving as the Group Chief Financial Officer at Dunedin City Council and the Director of Financial Services at the University of Otago.

His appointment comes at a critical time for New Zealand’s news media sector, as publishers navigate ongoing structural change, evolving audience behaviours, and the need for sustainable business models to support quality journalism.

“I’m honoured to take on the role of Chair at such an important time for our industry,” said McKenzie. “A strong, independent news media plays a vital role in supporting a healthy democracy and informed communities across New Zealand.”

“The News Publishers’ Association has an important role in bringing the industry together – ensuring we have a clear, unified voice on the issues that matter, from public policy to the long-term sustainability of journalism. I look forward to working with members to strengthen collaboration, share insights, and advocate for a future where trusted news continues to thrive.”

The News Publishers’ Association represents New Zealand’s news publishers and works to support the sector through advocacy, collaboration, and shared initiatives.

Under McKenzie’s leadership, the NPA is expected to continue its focus on strengthening the resilience of New Zealand’s media ecosystem, while responding to global challenges such as digital disruption, platform regulation, and shifting revenue models.
